The Camera Journal Press Club of Japan Camera Grand Prix awards of 2023 went to the Sony α7R V, while the Lens of the Year went to the OM System M. Zuiko DIGITAL ED 90mm F3.5 Macro IS PRO. The Readers’ Award was presented to the Panasonic LUMIX S5II. The Editors’ Awards include those for Technology and R&D prizes, which included the Leica M6 (R&D Prize); the Canon EOS R50 (R&D Prize); DxO PureRAW (Technology Prize); and the ProGrade CFexpress Type B GOLD 512 GB memory card (R&D Prize).
TIPA and the CJPC have a collaborative agreement whereby they cast votes on each other’s awards. TIPA’s selection for winners of the Camera Grand Prix awards was decided at the association’s General Assembly meeting held in Barcelona, Spain in late March 2023, with CJPC President Makoto Shibata, an Individual Member of TIPA, present and casting votes for the TIPA World Awards. This annual event is where members from around the world gather to select winners of the association’s annual TIPA World Awards, which this year included 40 categories in a wide range of imaging and photographic products, services, and technological advances.
The CJPC Camera Grand Prix, held since 1984, are prestigious awards whose winners are selected by a judging committee made up of the members of the CJPC, top editorial staff of member publications, academic experts, technical writers, professional photographers, and TIPA (Technical Image Press Association). The awards are chosen annually under the sponsorship of the CJPC, which was founded in Japan in 1963.
There are four award categories in the Camera Grand Prix 2023: “Camera of the Year”, “Lens of the Year”, a “Readers’ Award” and an “Editors’ Award.” The Camera, Lens and Editors’ awards were selected by CJPC members and advisors from among cameras and photography related products and equipment introduced in the Japanese market from April 1, 2022 through March 31, 2023. The Readers’ Award is selected by votes garnered from CJPC member magazine readers.
Said Thomas Gerwers, Chairman of TIPA, “TIPA and its worldwide members salute the work of the CJPC in promoting awareness and excitement about new and innovative products and technologies in the photo/imaging industry. We look forward to a continuing partnership in these endeavors.”
